Exhibition by Chris Sherwin
Precious Evolution is an important insight into the journey of Geelong Gold and Silversmith, Chris Sherwin, who follows in the tradition of Edward Fischer and Stuart Devlin, both highly regarded Geelong Silversmiths.
Chris produces highly tactile, functional objects and works in a scale that few artists achieve in precious metal. His jewellery and larger utilitarian objects are a product of refined design and careful material selection, often concealing a personal story, some form of technical innovation and at times have hidden elements that are not obvious at a first glance. He makes deliberate use of Australian timbers, gemstones and pearls in some of the works, and in others explores the subtlety of special and exotic materials. This is a rare insight into a 30 year career of a respected craftsperson, lecturer and teacher in jewellery, who has made considerable impact on the lives of emerging artists throughout Australia. Chris finds himself in the footsteps of a strong heritage of Geelong craftspeople working in precious metal since the gold rush of the 1850’s.
